Administrative Offices
Our administrative offices are located in the lower level of Thunderbird Arena. Entering from the Wesbrook Entrance, guests can access the office via the door to the right of the Box Office once inside. From there, the office is down the stairs and the first door on the left. Office hours are between 9am- 5pm Mondays- Fridays.
Alcohol
Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre has adopted the following policy to ensure everyone attending is enjoying their experience at the event and their safety is of the highest priority. The following items are to be noted:
- No alcoholic beverages are allowed to be brought into the venue.
- Guests who exhibit any signs of impairment will not be permitted into the venue.
- Guests who deliberately try to conceal any alcoholic beverages will not be allowed access into the venue.
- All guests should be prepared to show two pieces of identification and proof of age when purchasing alcoholic beverages.
- Guests are not allowed to take any alcoholic beverages outside of the venue.

Alcohol-Free Section
During games, concerts and any other events, Sections 101, 108 and 109 are alcohol-free. This is subject to change depending on the event and stage configuration.
Animals
Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre prohibits animals of any kind with the exception of service animals. All other animals will be asked to remain outside the facility.
Arena Floor
85′ x 200′ hockey surface with the ability to transform to a textured anti-slip and drivable surface with the use of ice decking. Concrete floors are available in the off-season.
Arena Tours
The venue is open from 6am-11pm daily and guests are welcome to come look around the venue at their leisure. For private tours, please contact the Senior Manager of Facility Events and Services to book a private tour of the facility. Depending on the day and time, the Senior Manager of Facility Events and Services will schedule a time to meet with your group and give a formal tour, answering questions about how the facility operates, some of the history of the facility and what we have hosted in previous years.
ATM Locations
An Automated Teller Machine (ATM) is located in the upper Concourse behind Section 111. Only certain events will have an ATM, depending on the number of guests for the event, however, most purchases within Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre can be made via card transaction.

Baby Changing Tables
Baby Changing tables are located within the Gender Neutral/ Wheelchair Accessible washrooms located on the North and South Concourses.
Bag Checks
The Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre ask that all guests to arrive early and travel light to our events. All persons and bags are subject to search upon entry to the facility. Bags that have passed through the inspection point must fit comfortably under your seat. Oversized bags and suitcases are not prohibited and the DMTSC does not provide an area to check bags, coats or any other personal belongings. Please also see “Security/Searches” below.
Banners and Signs
Banners and signs are allowed for some events. However, they may not be hung or fastened anywhere in the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre.
Bike Racks
Bike racks can be found at the Wesbrook Mall entrance and Thunderbird (North) entrance. Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre is not responsible for any lost or damaged items left on the bike racks.

Camera Policy
Failure to comply with the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre camera policy may result in the film/memory stick being confiscated. The following are general rules of camera use and can be overridden based on a specific request from the event or promoter:
- Sporting Events
Non-flash, still cameras point and shoot cameras may be used to take pictures of sporting events or events where house lights are illuminated during a performance. Any camera with an interchangable lens greater than 75mm, tripod or other photography equipment may not be used or placed in any area of the arena without prior approval. - Concerts and Other Events
Cameras with a detachable lens or lens of more than two inches are prohibited from all Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre concerts. The use of flash photography is also prohibited. The event producer reserves the right to deny camera use at any time before or during the event and to prohibit the use of any camera that is deemed unacceptable. - Video Recorders and Digital Cameras
Video recorders or digital cameras with recording capabilities are prohibited at any time during an event. Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre reserves the right to examine and prohibit use of any camera that staff deem unacceptable. Tape recorders are not allowed at any time.

The venue’s seat capacity is 6,500 which includes both floor and permanent seating.
Catering
In accordance with UBC Food Services, we do not permit external catering companies at Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre. Should you want to have your event catered, please contact UBC Food Services and the Senior Manager of Facility Events and Services to arrange a meeting.
Cellular Phones and Pagers
The use of cellular phones and pagers is permitted provided they do not interfere with other guests’ enjoyment of the event.
Children
For most events children younger than two years of age do not require a ticket if held on the lap of an accompanying adult. However, tickets will be required for children shows for any child over the age of one.
Fold-up strollers should be stored under your seat while non-folding strollers should be checked at Guest Services, located near the main entrance.
Concert and Event Merchandise
Special event and concert merchandise will be available for sale at various locations in the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre.
Concessions
Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre features numerous concession stands and portable stands operated throughout the arena. A wide selection of food is available.
Alcohol sales (including beer and wine) end during concerts and other events will cease prior to the end of the event.

Directions
Major roads coming into campus are West 4th, (turns into Chancellor Blvd) West 10th, (turns into University Blvd) West 16th, and Southwest Marine Drive. The arena is located on the corner of Thunderbird Blvd. and Wesbrook Mall. Detailed directions.

Gates open one hour prior to most events.

Electronic Cigarettes
Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre is a smoke-free arena. This includes e-cigarettes of any kind. Smoking in the building is strictly prohibited. Smoking should be done prior to the event. Should you want to leave during the event for a smoke break, guests are reminded of our “No Re-Entry” policy that is strictly enforced.

Elevators
Two elevators are located in the Arena for wheelchair access to all levels. Patrons with disabilities receive preferential access to elevators during all events held at Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre.
Emergency Evacuation Program
Designated Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre ushers have been trained in proper procedures for emergency preparedness. These designated employees will have primary duty of assisting patrons with disabilities to specific locations.
Exit and Re-Entry
There is no re-entry to Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre. All exits are final. Guests are not permitted to leave an event and then re-enter the same event.

Food and Beverages / Bottles and Cans
Guests are not permitted to bring any outside food or beverages into Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre. Containers including bottles, cans, thermos bottles, and plastic coolers are not permitted for the safety and protection of our guests.
Beer and alcohol sales during sporting events: With 20 minutes left in the game all concourse beer and alcohol sales will end.
Beer and alcohol sales during concerts and other events: Sales end one hour from the scheduled end of the event or as dictated by the event.

Gender Neutral/ Accessible Washrooms
Gender Neutral/ accessible Washrooms are located on each floor of the facility. On the upper concourse level, the washroom can be found across from the North Concession. On the lower concourse level, the washroom is located in the South Concourse.
Guest Conduct
Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre is committed to providing a fun, family atmosphere. Guests using foul language or appearing to be intoxicated will be ejected from the arena. Guests wearing obscene or indecent clothing will be denied entry. For the comfort and enjoyment of our guests, noisemakers of any type (e.g., air horns, cow bells, etc.) are prohibited. The use of laser pointers is strictly prohibited and will result in ejection. If someone is interfering with your enjoyment of the event, please contact Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre staff or Security member.
Guest Services
There is Guest Services location in the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre at the main entrance. It is staffed with knowledgeable guest services representatives who will assist you with your questions and concerns.

History
UBC’s first winter athletics facility opened in 1963 and has been home to the UBC Thunderbirds Hockey ever since. Named after the founder of Canada’s first national hockey program, Father David Bauer, the arena has undergone massive renovations and gained an additional two rinks: Thunderbird Arena and Protrans Community Arena. The Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre was renovated in 2008 for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. With the addition of Thunderbird and Protrans Community Arenas, the Centre has a total of three hockey arenas and is home to the Vancouver Whitecaps FC Training Facility. The Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre was named in honour of hockey builder Doug Mitchell. Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre consists of 5033 permanent seats, a 5000-square foot varsity fitness centre, 13 public dressing rooms, 6 referee/ coaches rooms, 2 varsity dressing rooms, 1 alumni room and the UBC Sports Hall of Fame.

Free internet/ wi-fi access is available to all guests using the ‘ubcvisitor’ network. Accepting UBC’s Terms of USE and an email is required when logging in.

Lost and Found
During an event lost and found service is located at Guest Services at the main entrance on Wesbrook Mall. Found items will be stored for 30 days. To learn if an item has been recovered, please call 604-822-6121. Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre is not responsible for lost or stolen items.
Lost Children
Guests are encouraged to instruct children in their group what to do if they get lost. If a child is lost or separated from his or her group, the child should ask the nearest Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre staff member for help. A lost child will be taken to Guest Services location at the main entrance on Wesbrook Mall. Parents looking for a child should follow the same procedure. Children who retain their ticket stub are much easier to locate and bring back to their seats and parents.

Parking
There is a 1,600 space parkade directly across the street from the venue (Thunderbird Parkade) and another 350 space surface lot directly behind it (Lot B1). Also, there is another 1,000 space parkade a few minutes walking distance north of the venue (Health Science Parkade). There is street meter parking all around the venue.

Pay Phones
There are no pay phones located in the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre.
Police and Security
For your safety and convenience, security personnel are stationed throughout the arena. If you have an emergency, please notify the nearest Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre staff member immediately.
Pucks and Protective Netting
During hockey events at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre, protective netting is hung above the glass behind both goals. This precaution limits the amount of pucks that leave the ice and enter the seating area. Although the netting adds extra precaution, guests are to remain alert at all times when the puck is in play as they may cause serious injury.

Recycling
Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre encourages all guests to reduce, reuse and recycle. all waster management receptacles throughout the Sports Centre have designated containers for plastics, paper, organics and garbage. Please check the signage on the containers in order to help keep our venue beautiful!
Re-Entry Policy
Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre has a “No Re-Entry” policy for all events.
Restrictions
In the interest of guest safety and enjoyment, Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre reserves the right to prevent certain items from being carried into the arena. These include, but are not limited to, weapons or anything else that can be used as dangerous projectiles. Similarly, other items that may jeopardize the safety or viewing/listening enjoyment of the guests may be prohibited.

Security/Searches
Please arrive early and allow for time to clear security. For your safety and security, all guests and their bags, purses, jackets, and other possessions may be subject to search prior to gaining admission. Some events may involve pat-down searches or security wanding performed by designated security personnel. Guests who refuse to submit to either a visual or pat-down search may be denied entry.
For your safety and convenience, security personnel are stationed throughout the arena. If you have an emergency, please notify the nearest Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre staff member immediately.
Smoking
Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre is a smoke-free arena. Smoking anywhere in the building is strictly prohibited.
Standing Policy
Guests are allowed to stand during events. When standing, however, guests are to only occupy the area in front of their designated seat. Standing in aisles, stairways, entrances to sections and chairs are strictly prohibited.
Strollers
Guests are permitted to bring strollers into the facility, however, they cannot be brought with them to their seat. Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre is not responsible for any lost, damaged, or stolen goods from strollers that are left unattended.

Washrooms
Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre has Men’s and Women’s washrooms on the upper North concourse and on the lower South concourse. These washrooms include one wheelchair accessible stall in each. There is one Gender/ Neutral/ Wheelchair Accessible washroom on each level of the concourse.
Water Fountains
There are two water fountains in total in Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre, specifically Thunderbird Arena, one on each level of the concourse.
Wheelchair/ Accessible Seating
All entrances at Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre are accessible by wheelchair with elevators located nearby. Wheelchair seating for a full arena event is located along the West concourse behind Sections 109-110. Wheelchair seating varies at each event and is dependent on the event’s stage configuration.
Will Call
If you choose to pickup your tickets at Will Call, the venue box office is open only during the event day and 1 hour prior to doors. We advise patrons to arrive early to pick up tickets to avoid long lines.
In order to pick up your tickets, you may be required to present:
- Your valid photo ID, driver’s license, or passport. A valid ID must be duly issued by a government agency and include a photo and a signature.
- The credit card you used to purchase the tickets.
- Your confirmation number.
The box office will not release tickets if the name on the ID and credit card does not match the name used to purchase the tickets from Ticketmaster or if the photo on the ID does not appear to be the photo of the person retrieving the tickets. To find out what other types of photo ID are acceptable at the venue’s Will Call, please contact Ticketmaster at 604-682-8455.
