Just Announced: Glass Animals are coming to UBC

Just announced! Glass Animals are coming to UBC for North American Dreamland Tour!

Adding to an already incredible year, Glass Animals have announced their North American “Dreamland Tour.” The run kicks off August 30th in Lewiston, NY and takes the band across North America well into 2022. The shows add to their already sold out UK tour dates, previously announced Red Rocks shows and confirmed festival performances at Bonnaroo, Life Is Beautiful, and Outside Lands.

Fans can purchase tickets on Thursday, May 6th at 10am local time at ticketmaster.ca. See full list of tour dates below.

In addition, last week the band was selected as 2021 Billboard Music Awards finalists for Top Rock Song “Heat Waves” and Top Rock Album Dreamland. This is the first time the band has been recognized by the BBMAs. The Billboard Music Awards LIVE will take place Sunday, May 23rd at 3pm EST/5pm PT on NBC.

Earlier this month, Glass Animals performed “Heat Waves” on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, where the band took over Margate’s Dreamland Theme Park and brought it back to life with an electrifying performance—watch HERE. In addition, they performed on The Ellen Degeneres Show where they took over a skate rink and used fan submitted footage to fill the television screens behind their performance—watch HERE.

Heat Waves” is taken from Glass Animals’ critically acclaimed third album Dreamland released last summer and this week was certified Platinum in the US. Nearly a year since its release, the song continues to grow globally across streaming platforms and on radio charts. Amassing over 450 million global streams to date, “Heat Waves” peaked at #1 on the Alternative Radio Chart for 3 consecutive weeks, a first for Glass Animals in their career. The track currently sits in the Top 20 on the Top 40 Radio Chart and is making similar moves at Hot AC and AAA. “Heat Waves” held the #1 spot on the ARIA Official Singles Chart in Australia for six consecutive weeks, marking the band’s first #1 single globally and in their release history. Last week, it hit a new peak on Spotify’s Global Top 50 Chart at #25. With over 2.5 million global adjusted single sales, the song has amassed 2 million daily streams and received 16 million views of the video on YouTube. Glass Animals recently hit a new Spotify monthly listener peak of 17.2 million, surpassing the likes of Tame Impala, Gorillaz, The 1975 and The Strokes.

Since its initial release last June, “Heat Waves” has experienced a global rise in support. Having originally resonated with Glass Animals fans, word quickly spread, and the track started getting healthy traction at radio globally. Next came a sync placement on FIFA, which opened up a whole new audience and helped the track begin to climb charts all over the world. “Heat Waves” most notably was then crowned number 1 on Triple J’s Hottest 100 – an accolade not given to a UK band since 2009 with previous winners including Kendrick Lamar and Billie Eilish. A third surge in attention came more recently with an organic Minecraft affiliation, whereby the YouTuber LoverFella (2.3M subscribers) rebuilt a Glass Animals fan’s base and surprised her with a meet and greet with the band who were waiting inside. Watch it HERE and the Extended BTS HERE. Dave Bayley recently sat down to chat about the track’s creation with Hrishikesh Hirway on the coveted Song Exploder Podcast. Listen to the interview HERE.

Glass Animals’ album Dreamland entered UK charts on its opening week at #2 (their highest ever scoring chart position, a massive 21 spots above their last album, Mercury Prize nominated How To Be A Human Being) and charted inside the top 10 in the US, Australia, New Zealand and Ireland. The album clocked up 160 million streams in its first week of release.

KALEO Announces “Fight or Flight” Tour for 2022

GRAMMY-nominated rock band KALEO has announced details for their “Fight or Flight Tour” now taking place in 2022.  Initially set for the summer of 2020, but rescheduled due to the global pandemic, the newly announced dates for the worldwide tour’s North American leg – which kicks off at Seattle’s Showbox SoDo on February 22, 2022 (full itinerary below) – are on sale now.  Nearly all of KALEO’s Fight or Flight shows will take place in the originally scheduled venues, with previously purchased tickets being honored in most cases.  For ticket info, individual show details, tour updates, and more, please visit www.OfficialKALEO.com.

KALEO’s current single “Break My Baby” – written solely by frontman, singer, and songwriter  JJ Julius Son – has made an immediate impact at Triple A radio as the #1 most added song after its first week at the format.  Additionally, the band recently unveiled a breath-taking, live performance version of the track that was recorded and filmed at the iconic ÞRÍDRANGAR lighthouse, located atop a remote rock formation in the North Atlantic Ocean, several miles off the coast of their native Iceland.  The stunning video (watch HERE) follows two previously released, live performance visuals that feature the beautiful, environmental landscapes found in Iceland:  “Save Yourself (LIVE at Fjallsárlón)” and “Way Down We Go (LIVE in a Volcano),” which showcased the band’s 2x-Platinum smash.  Last year, KALEO performed an acoustic version of “Break My Baby” for NBC’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers,” captured in the middle of a picturesque lake near Julius Son’s home in Iceland.

“Break My Baby” follows the band’s other single “I Want More,” which reached #6 on Billboard’s Triple A radio chart and was performed live in studio on CBS’ “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.”  Both tracks were delivered simultaneously last year to offer a first taste of new music since the band’s major label debut album, 2016’s RIAA-Gold certified A/B.  KALEO subsequently released “Alter Ego” – which Julius Son calls “probably our most classic rock song” – and the brooding ballad “Backbone.”  All four tracks will appear on the band’s forthcoming Elektra/Atlantic Records full length album Surface Sounds, set for release in the coming months.  More details to be announced soon.

About KALEO

Since the release of their gold-certified breakthrough album, 2016’s A/B, Icelandic rock band KALEO—led by frontman/songwriter JJ Julius Son—has taken their music around the world. The album spawned three hit singles – the GRAMMY-nominated “No Good,” the Gold-selling “All The Pretty Girls” and the chart-topping, 2x RIAA Platinum-certified “Way Down We Go” which was used in over two dozen television shows from Grey’s Anatomy to Riverdale, leading the No. 1 single to top The Hollywood Reporter’s Top TV Songs chart. After amassing over 1 Billion global streams, 39 international certifications, and countless sold-out headline shows spanning from London to Moscow, KALEO has proven to be a worldwide phenomenon. Known for their electrifying live performances, KALEO completely sold out their first U.S. headline tour and was a standout at Coachella, Lollapalooza and Bonnaroo and recently were hand-picked to open stadium dates for the Rolling Stones. Since KALEO wrapped a nearly non-stop 3-year touring schedule in support of A/B in October 2018, Julius Son has been in the studio working on the highly anticipated follow-up, Surface Sounds on Elektra/Atlantic. Current single “Break My Baby” is available everywhere now, along with lead single “I Want More,” “Alter Ego” and “Backbone.”

Cancelled: 2021 Canadian Tire National Skating Championships

CANCELLED: 2021 Canadian Tire National Skating Championships & 2021 Skate Canada Cup

OTTAWA, ON: With growing concern for the health and safety of all participants involved in the 2021 Canadian Tire National Skating Championships and the 2021 Skate Canada Cup given the evolution of the COVID-19 pandemic across Canada, Skate Canada has made the difficult decision to cancel these events. The championships were to occur from February 8-14, 2021 in Vancouver, B.C., at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre while the 2021 Skate Canada Cup was planned to be a virtual event in replacement of the pre-novice and novice competitions at the 2021 Skate Canada Challenge.

“We are deeply saddened for all athletes, coaches, and supporting individuals who are impacted by this decision and appreciate the incredible efforts to overcome ever-evolving training and access challenges to best prepare athletes for these events,” said Leanna Caron, President, Skate Canada.

The severe level of disruption to training of athletes caused by the pandemic and the evolving and unpredictable restrictions associated with travel and hosting events contributed to the decision. Despite diligence by all involved in securing opportunities for athletes to train, practice and compete this season, the risks associated with hosting the event were deemed too high.

“As we move into a new year, we continue to closely monitor and follow the guidance from the provincial and federal health authorities. Due to the continuous shift in requirements across the country, the inability of our athletes to train due to the closure of ice rinks and the number of participants that would be required to travel, it became clear that it would not be possible to host these events,” said Debra Armstrong, CEO, Skate Canada. “The health and safety of our community is our priority and we thank you all for taking the necessary precautions and doing what you can to limit the spread of COVID-19.”

Skate Canada would like to especially thank our title sponsor, Canadian Tire, for its continuous support and dedication to this event and our sport over the years. Additionally, we are appreciative for the effort and support provided by all our partners, including the local organizing committee – Skate Canada British Columbia-Yukon and event volunteers from across the country who have been part of preparations over the past several months for these events.

“We thank our athletes for continuing to inspire us and look forward to a brighter and prosperous 2021-2022 season,” said Armstrong.

Just Announced: 2021 Skate Canada International

Skate Canada announced that Vancouver, British Columbia, will host the 47th Skate Canada International. The event will take place at the arena at Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre from October 29 – 31, 2021.

“Skate Canada is thrilled to welcome some of the best skaters from around the world to Vancouver for the 2021 Skate Canada international. We are looking forward the 2021-22 season and creating memorable moments for all skating fans,” said Debra Armstrong, CEO, Skate Canada. “We are thrilled to be working with the city of Vancouver and Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre again next year to create an event all participants will enjoy.”

“Sport Hosting Vancouver is proud to continue our relationship with Skate Canada with the hosting the 2021 Skate Canada International,” said Michelle Collens, Senior Manager, Sport Hosting Vancouver. “Our combined hosting history will allow us to creatively reimagine the event experience and ensure the confidence to deliver live events once again. We look forward to welcoming both participants and spectators back to British Columbia when it is safe to do so.”

Skate Canada International is the second competition in the annual International Skating Union (ISU) Grand Prix of Figuring Skating series. The other events take place in the United States (Skate America), China (Cup of China), Japan (NHK Trophy), Russia (Rostelecom Cup) and France (Internationaux de France).

Each skater/team can be assigned a maximum of two events. Skaters are awarded points based on their placements at their events. The top six from each discipline (men, women, pair and ice dance) qualify for the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final.

The inaugural Skate Canada International was first held in 1973 in Calgary and the event was added to the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating in 1995, the year the series began. Vancouver has been a longtime partner of figure skating, hosting world renowned events such as the 2010 Winter Olympic Games, the ISU World Figure Skating Championships in 2001 and 1960 and the 2018 ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final. This is their second time hosting Skate Canada International, they previously hosted in 1978.
